Ernesto Carreon, Cebu’s champion of the labor law

Ernesto, a true-bloodied Barilino, finished his elementary at the Barili Elementary School, then at the Sta. Ana Academy High School. He came to Cebu City to earn his Bachelor of Arts at the Colegio de San Jose-Recoletes (now USJR). He then finished his Bachelor of Laws at the Gullas Law School. He was admitted to the Bar on March 14, 1969.

As a labor arbiter, he became the champion of the labor law, upholding the principles and tenets of the law, weighing whether the law favors the complainant or the respondent in his sala. When he retired from the government service, he became legal counsel and regional vice president of Associated Labor Unions.

He became representative of the labor sector to the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) 7. He vigorously defended and fought for the rights and welfare of the labor sector. On December 17, 2020 he was bestowed a posthumous award of RTWPB-7 (he died on November 19, 2020) a portion of the text of the award read: “for his personal example of leadership, competence and concern for the employees are the highest standards of excellence and serve as an inspiration to all”.

He shared his expertise (he also wrote a book) on the labor law as Law professor in the College of Law of the University of San Jose-Recoletos and at the University of the Visayas. He anchored a radio program at dyLA, the Voice of Labor.

Judge Ernesto, called by friends as Ernie, was the eldest child of Cresencio Fernandez Carreon and Lourdes Flores. His siblings were Eva Alita, a teacher who married Isaac Lanojan, also a teacher; Romeo (married Amparo Alesna), a retired police officer; Felomina (married Ronnie Lopez), who served the town of Barili, Cebu, for decades and retired as a local civil registrar; Marian (married Feliciano Eucaliga, a retired postmaster), a teacher; Edna (died when she was six years old); Cresencio Jr., a Commerce graduate married Rosabella Baculanta.

The Carreon Clan is predominantly from the south, there are members of the clan who became lawyers, aside from Judge Ernie are Leonardo P. Carreon, admitted to the Bar on April 26, 1989, who was appointed as assistant public prosecutor of Cebu City and later as municipal judge of Argao, Cebu, and Numeriano F. Carreon was admitted to the Bar on January 25, 1952 and served as judge and justice of the peace of Ronda, Cebu.

Judge Ernesto, married Clarita Noveras Carreon (a retired teacher of the Labangon Elementary School, Labangon, Cebu City), their union produced a beautiful daughter, Lorna (who married Neil Paul Diola) the couple works and lives in the United States of America.
