Post-Sinulog feels

Two days after the Sinulog and I still can't get over the festivity that happened. At the parade route, a lot of people were dancing their way to different directions and enjoying the street parties everywhere. But this wasn't the Sinulog that happened two years ago. The government was strict with street parties and the liquor ban. Yet most of the people I knew were too drunk to recall what transpired the other night. I'm sure I pretty much remembered.

I was inside the Cebu City Sports Center watching the different performances. I am equally amazed as every first-timer to see the event. Although it’s not my first time, the dances every year seem to level up making it hard to keep up with the standard the champion has always set. I enjoyed how there is a mix of artistry and hard work with every foot stomped, chant shouted, and hand waved.

What made the program inside the sports center different from the previous years was the visit of President Rodrigo Duterte. For the first time since he sat in position, he graced the Sinulog. Not that I am not thankful to see the president again and that he is making history, I just find all the security protocols a hassle. Why? Well, the Presidential Security Group had to clear the area hours before his actual arrival. There was a lockdown of the venue which prohibited those who wanted to get inside and go outside the venue. Our movements inside became limited, only to find out that he is delayed again.

Sometimes I think it is overreacting, but then it is better to be safe than sorry. Good thing the speech didn't last hours, or else the whole program would have ended at the wee hours of the night. We were already very tired from a weekend of preparation, the last thing we all wanted was to go home late.

But overall, I think the Sinulog is still relevant for everyone --regardless of race and religion. Last Sunday, I saw foreigners of different nationalities join in the fun. It was a sight to see. Tourism is still alive despite the many things that have happened in the country and around the world. It has never faded all throughout the years, and we should be proud about that.

When we try to assess what should be done to improve the Sinulog, there are so many that it will be hard to discuss this in one sitting. I only hope that those who will be handling the different committees will be enlightened that they put the good of others before theirs. When it comes to security, everything was in order. I only hope this will go on until the next years, and that the Sinulog will not be too commercialized but become an avenue open to everyone who want to showcase the best of Cebu.
