The Chase

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

In an attempt to catch up to the transportation secretary during their road site inspection for the Bus Rapid Transit, me and my teammate rode a motorcycle-for-hire commonly known as the habal-habal. I rode on the motorcycle and held on for dear life as the two-wheeled vehicle whisked us away to catch the subjects. No matter how fast we went, we weren't able to join them in their inspection. The sad part is the transportation secretary was not able to experience the Cebu traffic. Why? Talk about perks and having that best foot forward. To my dismay, the inspection was only just routine and no concrete decision was made whether or not the BRT would push through.

They said they needed more study and other proposals on what else the city needs to address traffic congestion. Some of the options they floated was the monorail and the Light Rail Transit. This upset Mayor Osmeña who worked his way to finally get NEDA approval for the BRT. The mayor cited that a lot of studies were already made, even by the international organizations that funded the project in the first place. It seems like the department of transportation is torn, but not by two lovers I suppose.

What is best for Cebu to solve the traffic woes? Everybody has their own take. There is no stopping the development that is too fast for everyone to catch up with. There is a move to ban private vehicles on the road. But if they do so there must be a good mass transport system. So the cycle of the question goes on.

We can never achieve anything if we keep on asking and studying. You can never be so sure unless you try. There is an invisible chase between technology and development and the will to have a better life.

Politicians are also promising us good lives if we vote for them. But after appointed and people only go after one another because of personal differences then there is a problem.

As for me, I'm willing to let go of my own vehicle if the government would give us the proper transportation that we deserve. The system that won't require long lines or attacking each other with elbows and fists just to get a seat. This system must also be environment- and budget-friendly for every Cebuano.

I personally think that government should shape up and put personal differences aside. The Cebuanos are counting on them to make their lives better. The more they delay the project, the more our trust in them declines. The people deserve the best out of the votes they cast during the elections. The issue of traffic is only one of the many promises to be solved that is on verge of breaking down. Whether or not BRT is needed in Cebu, we have to do something to address the traffic problem that is slowly getting out of hand.
