PNP tightens security in Quezon, Camarines Sur

MANILA, Philippines — Security was tightened in Camarines Sur following a landmine blast that killed two soldiers and wounded three others on Friday in Balatan town, the Philippine National Police said.

The PNP also vowed to bring to justice the attackers of the 1st Quezon Provincial Mobile Force Company patrol unit that also left Pat. Ron Jay Chavez dead.

Chavez was on routine patrol with police M/Sgt. Sonny Caringal and Pat. Kim Kenneth Averia when several gunmen shot them in Barangay San Isidro in Claveria, Quezon.

The leader of the armed men, identified only as Mark of Tiaong town, was killed in a follow-up operation.

“This incident reminds us of the risks our police officers face every day. We mourn the loss of Patrolman Chavez and assure his family and our wounded personnel that the PNP stands with them,” acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said.

He also ordered police commanders in Camarines Sur and nearby provinces to intensify security measures and support military operations against communist rebels after a landmine detonated in Barangay Cabungan, killing two soldiers on the spot and injuring three others.

“We will not stop until those behind this attack are held accountable and until our communities can live in peace,” Nartatez vowed, as the PNP established more checkpoints and increased police visibility.
