4.8 quake rocks La Union town

BAUANG, La Union,  Philippines —  A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck the town of Bauang in La Union yesterday afternoon, with intensities felt in several areas in Northern Luzon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs said the quake occurred at 5:57 p.m. and its epicenter was located seven kilometers south of Bauang town.

The temblor was felt at Intensities 3 and 1 in Baguio and Itogon, Benguet, respectively.

Instrumental Intensity 3 was recorded in Vigan, Ilocos Sur and Bani, Pangasinan; 2 in San Fernando, La Union and Dagupan, Pangasinan, and 1 in Bangar and Santol in La Union as well as in Bolinao, Pangasinan.

State seismologists said the quake was tectonic in origin, caused by the movement of an active fault system in the region.

The quake was not expected to generate aftershocks or cause damage to property.
