MANILA, Philippines — Parts of Barangay San Jose in Navotas were submerged in neck-deep flooding yesterday afternoon after a river wall along Celest Street was damaged, causing water to breach during high tide.
As of 5:15 p.m., a total of 30 families comprising of 121 people were evacuated to the Navotas Elementary School I and San Jose barangay hall.
Irish Cubillan, Navotas public information office chief, said the river wall located within a shipyard has long been needing repairs.
“It’s just that there are six families living there,” Cubillan told The STAR over the phone.
Compounding the situation is the ongoing repair of the Tangos-Tanza navigational gate, she added. The floodgate repair is expected to be completed on July 1.
“During high tide, the floodgate can prevent water from coming in,” Cubillan said.
She assured residents that sandbagging would be conducted once the flood subsides.
Cubillan also said that two of the families residing along the river wall were relocated to Naic, Cavite while the other four are waiting for their units in the city-run housing project.
