1,100 sacks of garbage gathered in Malabon

MANILA, Philippines — At least 1,100 sacks of garbage were collected in the national government’s cleanup drive in the coastline in Malabon City yesterday.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos Jr. led the implementation of President Marcos’ Kalinisan program, which stands for Kalinga at Inisyatiba para sa Malinis na Bayan, at the Dampalit Megadike Park along M. Sioson street.

The local government said over 1,800 government workers and volunteers joined the event, which started at around 5 a.m.

Abalos said the program, which started in Baseco in Manila, is meant to instill in every Filipino the importance of keeping their surroundings free of trash.

“I hope we would reach that point that we have discipline and not litter,” Abalos told reporters in an interview.

Data from the city government showed that at least 1,124 sacks of assorted garbage were collected from the coastal barangay of Dampalit.

Mayor Jeannie Sandoval said the situation in Malabon improved after they implemented Marcos’ Kalinisan program as there have been lesser floods in the city.

The local chief executive said barangay officials are doing their own cleanup drives almost on a daily basis.

The Kalinisan programs encourage Filipinos to maintain a clean and safe community.
