55 NPA rebels surrender to PNP

MANILA, Philippines — Fifty-five people claiming to be New People’s Army (NPA) rebels surrendered to the government on Monday, the Philippine National (PNP) reported yesterday.

PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. welcomed the communist rebels during a ceremony at the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) headquarters at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City.

The NCRPO, under the leadership of Maj. Gen. Jonnel Estomo, facilitated the rebels’ surrender and withdrawal of allegiance from the Communist Party of the Philippines.

Azurin said the surrender of the rebels was a product of the government’s campaign to convince communist insurgents to give up armed conflict and return to mainstream society.

“This series of surrenders of the former communist rebels resulted from the relentless campaign of our police and military forces against terrorism,” he said in a statement.

During the activity, the rebels turned over nine firearms, 23 handheld radios, an improvised explosive device and assorted ammunition.

Azurin said they will continue to mobilize forces to provide new opportunities to rebels who surrendered to the government.

“Aming titiyakin na kayo ay makakapagsimula ng bagong buhay at makakatanggap ng mga benepisyong ibinibigay ng (What we will ensure is you will start a new life and receive benefits from the) Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program,” he said.
