Quakes jolt Mindanao
MANILA, Philippines — Two earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.3 and 4.7 hit parts of Mindanao yesterday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
Phivolcs said the magnitude 5.3 quake hit off the coast of Balut Island in Sarangani, Davao Occidental. The quake, which was tectonic in origin, struck at around 1:20 a.m.
The second quake hit north of Burgos, Surigao del Norte at around 7:12 a.m.
Phivolcs said the earthquake had a depth of focus of 20 kilometers.
Instrumental Intensity 2 was reported in Surigao City.
No damage or aftershocks were expected from the quakes.
