MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City government has finished 99 school infrastructure projects ahead of the opening of face-to-face classes last week.

Data from the city engineering department showed that the local government rehabilitated 33 school buildings and upgraded the electrical systems of 35 schools in the past three years.

The city government was able to provide 15 water and sanitation posts, improve 12 school sites and construct four school facilities.

“Although we have a strict and rigorous bidding and procurement process, the city was able to accomplish various school projects,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said.

“We continue to coordinate with the Schools Division Office to know what other assistance the local government can extend to our schools,” Belmonte added.

The city government said 26 infrastructure projects are ongoing in various schools while 30 more proposed projects are under evaluation for engineering intervention.

The local government said 250,054 computer tablets with internet connectivity were given to Grade 4 to Grade 12 students in public schools.

A total of 710,371 learning kits, 6,875,846 modules and 430,438 hygiene kits were distributed to students in all grade levels.

Another 4,784 students have received education assistance.

The city government has started the delivery of 17,000 tablet armchairs for 21 public high schools. School supplies will also be distributed to students as well as tablets for Grades 1 to 3.

To support the operations and maintenance of public schools, city hall contracted office aides, security enforcers, utility and other personnel to augment the schools’ manpower.

All public schools in Quezon City were provided with internet subscription, printers and photocopier machines.

The local government also turned over 20 motor vehicles and a delivery van to the Schools Division Office.

Teachers will receive monthly and quarterly allowances from the city hall as well as laptops and internet connectivity.

Additional allowances are also provided for Alternative Learning System (ALS) and Madrasah teachers.

The local government has issued nearly 100,000 books to pupils of daycare centers as well as school supplies, hygiene kits, thermal scanners and food packs.

As for schools providing education to students with special needs, the city government distributed 300 sets of special education assessment packages, 60 units of Smart TV, 3,600 ALS modules, worksheets and mental health program manuals for teachers. – Elizabeth Marcelo
