5.6-quake jolts Davao del Sur

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude-5.6 earthquake jolted Magsaysay town in Davao del Sur and nearby provinces yesterday afternoon.

The quake, which was tectonic in origin, occurred at around 4:23 p.m., according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

It was felt at Intensity 5 in Kidapawan, Davao City, Tupi and Polomolok in South Cotabato as well as in Malungon, Sarangani.

Intensity 4 was felt in Bansalan, Digos, Matanao and Sta. Cruz, all in Davao del Sur; Banga, Koronadal, Norala and Tampakan in South Cotabato; Alabel, Columbio, Lutayan, President Quirino, Sarangani, Senator Ninoy Aquino in Sultan Kudarat, and Tulunan and M’lang in Cotabato.

State seismologists said the quake could generate aftershocks and cause damage to property.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said it was coordinating with its regional counterparts for damage assessments.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines said the quake did not cause damage to its airports and facilities in Mindanao.
