MANILA, Philippines — The Conference of Major Superiors in the Philippines has expressed its support for the Carmelite nuns of Cebu, saying the CMSP is “profoundly distrubed and deeply concerned” over how the “Maid in Malacañang” film maligned the nuns through a scene depicting them playing mahjong with the late former president Cory Aquino.
In a statement, the group – formerly known as the Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines – said that its members express solidarity with the Discalced Carmelite Nuns in the quest for truth and fairness against the controversial film.
“True to their vocation, they were praying, fasting and having vigil as they begged for God’s mercy and light for our nation. A malicious attack on the integrity of the nuns is an affront to all consecrated women and harms the unity of the Church at large,” the CMSP said.
The CMSP also urged moviegoers to consider “Maid in Malacañang” as fictional and not a factual narrative of the historical events related to the “non-violent” EDSA People Power Revolt in 1986. The group stressed that the film misrepresented the truth and has the potential to mislead people, especially the youth.
“To tell the truth, to stand for the truth, and to defend the truth is a moral imperative in a society where fake news, disinformation, misinformation and peddling of lies become normal and natural,” the CMSP said.
The group vowed to remain vigilant and reaffirm its commitment to oppose and denounce any form of “historical distortion” as it emphasized that the truth will make the country free.
