Court acquits ex-PNOC lawyer of parricide
MANILA, Philippines — A former lawyer, who used to work for the Philippine National Oil Corp., has been acquitted of murdering his wife almost 20 years ago in Tondo, Manila.
In a ruling dated July 14, the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 54 reversed the May 2021 decision of RTC Branch 21, which found John Fabico guilty of parricide. He was sentenced to life in prison.
The court ordered Fabico’s release from detention.
In a 10-page decision, RTC Branch 54 Judge Maria Paz Reyes-Yson said the prosecution failed to prove that Fabico shot dead his wife, Editha, on Dec. 23, 2002.
The court ruled that the testimony of prosecution witness housemaid Liza Alipuyo was inconsistent with the statements of Fabico’s two children.
Reyes-Yson also gave weight to the testimony of Manila RTC Judge Virgilio Macaraig that Fabico was in his office in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig when the shooting occurred.
