Basilan poll exec shot dead
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A female election officer was gunned down outside a satellite office of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Isabela City in Basilan yesterday.
Ruayna Edris-Sayyadi, election officer of Al-Barka town, was attending to the registration of voters in Barangay Doña Ramona when she was shot at around 3 p.m., Isabela City police station chief Lt. Col. Junpikar Sitin said.
Sitin said the unidentified gunman approached the victim and shot her from behind. The assailant fled on a motorcycle.
The victim was pronounced dead on arrival in a hospital.
Prior to her assignment to Al-Barka, Sayyadi served as election officer of Hadji Muhammad Ajul town.
Roberto dela Peña, Comelec Basilan director, ordered all election officers in the province to implement security measures in their offices following the incident.
