Fiscal summons youth panel chief on cyberlibel raps

MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City prosecutor’s office has summoned National Youth Commission chairperson Ronald Gian Carlo Cardema in connection with the charges filed against him by retired Commission on Elections commissioner Rowena Guanzon.

Assistant City Prosecutor Raphael Joseph Seares issued a subpoena for Cardema to appear for preliminary investigation hearings on Aug. 4 and 11 on the complaints against him for cyberlibel and unjust vexation.

Guanzon shared a copy of the subpoena dated June 28 on her Twitter account.

Seares said no motion to dismiss would be entertained. Should Cardema fail to attend, it means he waived his right to submit his own evidence.

“No postponement shall be granted except on meritorious grounds,” Seares said.

Guanzon, a substitute nominee of the Komunidad ng Pamilya, Pasyente at Persons with Disabilities (P3PWD) party-list, earlier said she sued Cardema in response to the latter’s attacks against her.

Cardema claimed Guanzon forced all P3PWD nominees to resign so that she could sit as the party-list group’s first nominee in the House of Representatives.
