MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Caloy, which is being enhanced by the southwest monsoon or habagat, will continue to bring rains over most parts of the country today, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
PAGASA said the southwest monsoon would prevail in the next two days and bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms.
Organizers have prepared contingency plans in case of bad weather during the inaugural of president-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Manila at noon today.
Bataan, Zambales, Palawan, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Cavite, Batangas and Laguna will have moderate to heavy rain.
Metro Manila, Romblon, Marinduque, Rizal, Tarlac, Pampanga, Aurora, Quezon as well as Ilocos, Bicol and Western Visayas will have cloudy skies with scattered rains due to the monsoon trough and the southwest monsoon.
PAGASA said scattered flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in high-risk areas. The rest of the country will see isolated rains.
The tropical depression was monitored at 410 kilometers west of Iba, Zambales as of 5 p.m. yesterday.
The weather disturbance has maximum sustained winds of 45 kms per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph while moving northwest slowly.
Moderate to rough seas can be expected on the seaboards of Northern Luzon and western seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon, which can be risky for small seacraft.
No cyclone wind signal
PAGASA said no tropical cyclone wind signal is in effect over any part of the country.
It said Caloy was expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility in the next 24 hours.
The tropical depression is forecast to be around 525 kilometers northwest of Dagupan City in Pangasinan by 5 p.m. today.
It could slightly intensify into a tropical storm by Friday when it will be 730 kms west of Laoag.
PAGASA said Caloy could make landfall over the southern portion of China by weekend and reach a peak intensity of 75 kph.
Caloy is the third tropical depression to enter the country this year after Basyang and Agaton, both in April.
PAGASA said another low-pressure area northeast of Luzon may develop in the next two days.
