Pangasinan town free from red tide

Ric Sapnu - The Philippine Star

SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Philippines — The coastal waters of Bolinao in Pangasinan are now free from algae that causes the red tide toxin, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said yesterday.

Shellfish samples collected from the area tested negative for paralytic poison or red tide, according to Rosario Segundina Gaerlan, chief of BFAR-Ilocos region.

This means that shellfish and other seafood harvested from the coastal waters of Bolinao are safe for human consumption.

“Gathering, harvesting, transporting and sale of shellfish from the area are now permitted,” Gaerlan said.

She commended the BFAR and the local government for continuously monitoring the quality of water, safeguarding public health and protecting the shellfish industry.

A BFAR shellfish advisory issued on June 17 said the results were confirmed after shellfish samplings were done for three consecutive weeks.
