Gun ban: 3,193 violators nabbed

MANILA, Philippines — Up to 3,193 people were arrested nationwide for violating the election gun ban, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported yesterday.

The PNP said 3,012 law enforcement operations were conducted since the election period started on Jan. 9.

At least 3,072 of the violators are civilians, 60 security guards, 23 police personnel and 12 soldiers. Twenty-six were unidentified.

Leonilo Bayan was arrested for indiscriminate firing in Barangay Cabangaan in Silang, Cavite on Tuesday.

The suspect yielded a 9mm handgun. Two bullet shells were recovered at the scene.

Police confiscated 2,494 guns, 1,028 bladed weapons, 126 explosives and 15,351 bullets.

The PNP said 1,147 of the violators were arrested in Metro Manila, 343 in Calabarzon, 335 in Central Visayas, 292 in Central Luzon and 191 in Western Visayas.

The gun ban will be in effect until the end of the election period on June 8.
