Phivolcs sets up Iloilo seismic station

Romina Cabrera - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has established its first seismic station in Iloilo.

The seismic station is located at a sugarcane plantation in Barangay Ponong Pequeno in Duenas town.

“This allows faster and more acurate issuance of earthquake information to decision makers, emergency responders and the general public,” Phivolcs said in a statement.

It said earthquake disaster preparedness and risk reduction initiatives will also be enhanced with improved determination of earthquake parameters and detectability of seismic events.

The seismic station is the 115th in the country. Its inauguration will be held on April 28.
