Pasig starts compensation for land acquired in 1990s
MANILA, Philippines — Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto said on Friday they continue to clean up the mess of the city government, even those that occurred three decades ago.
Sotto bared that in the 1990s, the city government did not compensate the owners of lands it had acquired.
He cited as an example a 64-square-meter property acquired by the city government without paying the owner a single centavo.
“By law, the government can expropriate for public use as long as there is proper payment,” Sotto said in a Facebook post on Friday.
For Sotto, local government units involved in this kind of practice are not different from thieves.
“If the government didn’t pay, this is also like theft. Let’s think if this happened to us,” he said.
Sotto said they have started proceedings to compensate the owner of the property, wherein the city government will pay P16,500 per square meters or P1.05 million for the entire lot.
“Now, we are correcting the wrongs that happened before,” he said.
