Magnitude-6.4 quake jolts Metro Manila, nearby provinces

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude-6.4 earthquake shook parts of Metro Manila and several provinces early yesterday morning.

The quake, which originated 110 kilometers northwest of Lubang, Occidental Mindoro, occurred at 5:05 a.m., according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs said no tsunami warning was issued, but aftershocks were expected from the temblor that was tectonic in origin.

The quake was felt at Intensity 3 in Makati, Mandaluyong, Quezon City and Taguig as well as in Calumpit, Bulacan; Carmona and Tagaytay in Cavite; Guagua in Pampanga; Olongapo, and Calapan in Oriental Mindoro.

Intensity 2 was felt in parts of Las Piñas, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Quezon City and Pasig as well as in Baler, Aurora; Malolos, Marilao, Pandi, Plaridel, San Ildefonso and San Rafael, all in Bulacan; Gapan and Palayan, both in Nueva Ecija; Iba in Zambales; Batangas City and Talisay, both in Batangas; Dolores and Gumaca, both in Quezon, and Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said assessment is ongoing.
