2 rebels slain in Mindoro clash

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines —  Two suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas were killed in an encounter in Rizal, Occidental Mindoro on Sunday afternoon.

The fatalities, whose identities were not immediately available, were reportedly members of the NPA-Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee based in Occidental Mindoro.

Troopers of the Army’s 4th Infantry Battalion were on their way to check reports about the presence of armed men in Barangay Manoot when the firefight erupted in Sitio Ibok at around 4:35 p.m.

The soldiers reportedly caught the rebels planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the area.

The military recovered two revolvers, IEDs, ammunition, personal belongings and revolutionary document in the area, according to Maj. Gen. Rowen Tolentino, chief of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division.
