Davao scraps use of barriers in PUVs, motorbikes

Edith Regalado - The Philippine Star

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Barriers in motorcycles, jeepneys and other public utility vehicles (PUVs) are no longer required in this city.

Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio issued an executive order (EO) on Tuesday lifting the use of barriers, saying there is a need to ease restrictions with the decrease in COVID-19 cases and intensified vaccination program.

The use of barriers in PUVs was implemented to ensure that passengers could observe physical distancing and maintain the required capacity for vehicles.

“Barriers in public utility vehicles and motorcycles are encouraged for voluntary use only,” the EO read.

Carpio had earlier discontinued the use of face shields in jeepneys.

The Department of Health-Davao regional office said 21 COVID cases were recorded in the city on Nov. 1, bringing the active infections to 895.

At least 788,001 city residents have been fully vaccinated while 882,818 have received their first shot as of Oct. 29.
