P1.2 million smuggled cigarettes recovered in Zamboanga del Sur

ZAMBOANGA CITY MANILA, Philippines — Police intercepted a truck loaded with smuggled cigarettes worth P1.2 million at a checkpoint in Barangay Baloyboan in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur on Tuesday night.

Lt. Col. Joenery Ojas, acting city police chief, said truck driver David Franco, 43, a native of Diplahan, Zamboanga Sibugay province, and Michael Bryan Tagaytay, 21, a resident of Zamboanga City, were arrested.

Ojas said the truck, which came from this city, was loaded with 115 master cases of cigarettes without tax stamps.

He said police coordinated with the Bureau of Internal Revenue for disposition of the smuggled cigarettes. Charges have been readied against the suspects.
