BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — A trainer plane crashed in Barangay Urayong Bayan in Bauang, La Union yesterday, killing a 25-year-old student pilot.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said the fatality, a student of the First Aviation Academy at the Subic Bay International Airport, was on a solo cross-country flight on a Tecnam P-2010 aircraft with registry number RP-C8230.

“According to the flight plan filed by the school, the flight originated from Iba airport in Zambales, en route to La Union airport and Lingayen airport then back to Iba airport,” CAAP said.

The victim, who has yet to be identified pending notification of his family members, was declared dead on arrival at the Caba municipal health office.

A team from CAAP’s Aircraft Accident Investigation and Inquiry Board was dispatched and arrived at the crash site at around 2 p.m.

The Philippine Coast Guard is securing the crash site. Search and retrieval of aircraft debris, which sank around 300 meters away from the shore, was ongoing. – Richmond Mercurio, Rudy Santos
