Rebel couple surrender

Miriam Desacada - The Philippine Star

TACLOBAN, Philippines — A man and his wife recruited by the New People’s Army (NPA) 18 years ago have surrendered to authorities in Dolores, Eastern Samar.

In a report obtained by journalists on Friday, police said alias Maoy, 34, and his 30-year-old wife were newlyweds when they first joined the communist group.

“They have four children who grew up with them in the mountains. They were loyal to the revolutionary movement until they realized that the NPA had done nothing to help their family,” authorities said.

The couple decided to abandon the underground movement after they were accused last month of being traitors.

As a punishment, the NPA decided to relocate them outside Eastern Visayas, prompting the couple to surrender.
