MANILA, Philippines — At least 20 Philippine National Police (PNP) officers in Metro Manila who contracted COVID-19 are in critical condition.

The PNP has 831 active COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila, based on its latest report released yesterday. Of the number, 710 are with police units under the National Capital Region Police Office while 121 are from Camp Crame.

Sources said yesterday 20 of the COVID-19 patients are in critical
condition and under close monitoring. Among them is a police general who is battling severe symptoms of the disease.

One of the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity said the
police official has been receiving intensive medical care.

Another source said doctors could not guarantee if all the 20 patients can
survive their bout with the virus.

The PNP has documented 173 COVID-19 cases among its units all over the country as of yesterday, bringing the number of personnel still afflicted with the disease at 2,614.

PNP deputy chief for administration Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said 67 of the new patients are from Metro Manila while 53 are from administrative and operational support units of the PNP.

The remaining 53 are from various police regional offices, Eleazar added.

The Kiangan Billeting Center at Camp Crame remains full, with 53 of the 55 beds occupied by patients.

At least 16,230 PNP members have contracted COVID-19 since last year. Forty have died while 13,576 or 83.64 percent of the patients have recovered.
