Magnitude 6.2 quake jolts Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 6.2 earthquake rocked parts of Mindanao yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said the quake occurred at around 7:21 a.m., with its epicenter traced 86 kilometers southeast of Sarangani, Davao Occidental.

The temblor was felt at Intensity 5, which is classified as strong, in General Santos City.

It was felt at Intensity 4 or moderately strong in Kiamba, Alabel, Maasim, Glan, Malungon and Malapatan in Sarangani; Lebak, Sultan Kudarat; Datu Blah Sinsuat, Maguindanao, and Koronadal City, Polomolok, Tampakan and Tupi in South Cotabato.

The quake was felt at Intensity 3 in Maitum, Sarangani; Cotabato City; Davao City; Kidapawan City in North Cotabato, and Tantangan and Sto. Niño in South Cotabato .

It was felt at Intensity 2 in Columbio and Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat and Magpet, North Cotabato.

Phivolcs warned the public of damage and aftershocks.

In Bicol, a magnitude 4.1 temblor struck at about 8 a.m. The epicenter was located 21 kms southeast of Bato, Catanduanes.

The quake was felt at Intensity 2 in Legazpi City, Albay. – Edith Regalado
