Ex-gov sued for graft anew

MANILA, Philippines — Quezon Rep. David Suarez is facing another graft complaint before the Office of the Ombudsman, in connection with unliquidated cash advances during his term as governor.

In an affidavit filed yesterday, Quezon residents Leonito Batugon, Antonio Almoneda, Marife Benusa and Mauro Forneste said Suarez should be investigated for violation of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act and malversation of public funds.

Aside from Suarez, named respondents in the complaint were provincial accountant Evangelina Ong, treasurer Rosario Marilou Uy and budget officer Diego Salas.

The complaint stemmed from the alleged anomalous disbursement of P56.14 million in cash advances to provincial officials and employees from 2013 to 2018.

The complainants said Suarez allowed the disbursement of the funds even as the officials and employees have yet to liquidate their previous cash advances.

The complainants said the funds remain unliquidated despite demands from the Commission on Audit.

Suarez is also facing plunder and graft complaints in connection with the allegedly anomalous procurement of P71.4 million worth of agricultural and marine supplies from 2015 to 2017.
