Quakes shake Masbate

LEGAZPI CITY , Philippines — Four earthquakes jolted Masbate yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Phivolcs said a magnitude 4.4 quake rocked Dimasalang town at about 3:56 a.m.

The temblor was felt at Intensity 4, which is classified as moderately strong, in Dimasalang and Intensity 3 in Palanas and Masbate City.

Quakes with magnitudes of 3, 2.9 and 3.3 struck four kilometers west of Batuan at about 8:32 a.m., seven kilometers west of Palanas at 12:12 p.m. and 10 kilometers west of Uson, respectively.

The magnitude 3.3 temblor was felt at Intensity 2 in Masbate City.

On Sunday, a magnitude 5 quake rocked Pio V. Corpus town at about 2:35 p.m. It was followed by three more quakes, the strongest of which was felt at Intensity 4.

Phivolcs said the quakes were caused by the movement of the Philippine Fault Zone-Masbate and Catanduanes segments.
