MANILA, Philippines — The Manila city government yesterday entered into an agreement with Grab Philippines to provide jobs to tricycle and motorcycle drivers displaced by the coronavirus pandemic.
Mayor Isko Moreno said 2,000 drivers would be employed under GrabFood and GrabExpress.
Among those who will benefit from the program are micro-small and medium enterprises, Moreno said.
“This will help both the employees and businesses,” he said.
Grab Philippines country head Brian Cu said the program is the company’s way of giving back to the city.
“Aside from big restaurants, Manila also have small ones that serve great food. We want to help merchants get into the digital world and boost their sales,” Cu said.
Under the agreement, the city’s Public Employment Service Office and Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau will assist drivers in applying as delivery partners for Grab Philippines.
The local government will also hire 100 residents who can sew washable face masks to be distributed to Manilans.
