Quezon City rolls out online ‘palengke’

MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City government yesterday launched a project dubbed online “palengke” where residents can buy fresh produce without leaving their homes.

The community mart links public markets to consumers through a mobile app.

The project was initiated by Vice President Leni Robredo in partnership with local markets in the city affected by the enhanced community quarantine.

Mayor Joy Belmonte said the project would provide both residents and vendors an easier and safer way to transact business.

“This is a win-win situation as vendors will be able to continuously make a living while giving customers access to fresh produce from the comfort of their homes,” Belmonte said.

The project will also tap tricycle drivers to deliver the orders from the public markets to the households.

The community mart was piloted at the Kamuning Market, which serves the nearby Barangays Obrero, South Triangle, Kamuning, Mariana, Sacred Heart and Laging Handa.

The Frisco Market in the city was placed on lockdown for disinfection.
