Taguig rolls out Philippine’s ‘most comprehensive’ scholarship program

MANILA, Philippines — More students in Taguig will receive scholarships after the city council passed on Friday an ordinance it described as the “most comprehensive” scholarship program in the country.

Ordinance No. 6, series of 2020, allots P700 million to fund new scholarships for athletes; students of medicine, engineering and other fields; and public servants interested in continuing their education, according to the city government.

Under the program, varsity members of colleges and universities in Taguig, as well as selected public high schools, will be provided supplementary allowances.

Those who win medals and other awards will also receive incentives.

Eligible students of medicine, engineering and other fields will be able to receive full scholarships by signing an agreement to serve the city government.

The program will shoulder tuition and miscellaneous fees and scholars will receive book allowance, living and transportation allowance and merit incentives.

The city government also added scholarship grants for children or dependents of public servants in the city.

Regular college students of the Taguig City University will also be scholars of the city government and be given an allowance.

All graduates of public high schools will be given P15,000 in scholarship vouchers “to encourage them to pursue post-secondary education and avail of the city’s scholarship programs,” the city government said.
