8 hurt as bridge snaps in Negros Occidental
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – Eight persons including four minors were rushed to a hospital after they fell from a hanging bridge in Kabankalan, Negros Occidental yesterday.
The victims were watching a fluvial parade in Sitio Camugao, Barangay 6 when the cables supporting the 20-meter bridge snapped, according to Mayor Pedro Zayco.
One of the four minors suffered a fractured arm. Another minor, who was initially reported missing, was found and revived by members of a search and rescue team.
Elbert Javellana, chief of the city disaster risk reduction management council, told journalists that the bridge was 30 years old.
Zayco ordered the bridge closed. He said there could have been too many people on the bridge and the weight caused the cables to snap.
The city government will extend assistance to the victims, especially the minor who suffered a fractured arm.
Aside from the hanging bridge, Zayco said a P126-million bridge inaugurated two years ago is being used by residents and motorists.
