‘Tisoy to fill Angat Dam’

MALOLOS, Philippines — The water level in Angat Dam is seen to significantly increase when Typhoon Tisoy (international name Kammuri) dumps heavy rains as it crosses over Luzon.

GMA-7 resident meteorologist Nathaniel Cruz yesterday said Tisoy could bring torrential rains that would raise the water level in the dam by four to five meters.

The Bulacan provincial disaster risk reduction and management office (PDRRMO) said it expects Tisoy’s rains to fill Angat Dam, the primary source of water for Metro Manila residents.

Monitoring by the PDRRMO showed that the dam’s water level rose to 188.82 meters on Saturday, 188.98 meters on Sunday and 189.05 meters at 8 a.m. yesterday.

The water level is below the 212 meters ideal end-of-the-year elevation.

Rains spawned by Typhoons Ramon and Sarah failed to increase the water level in the dam. 

Meanwhile, the Isabela PDRRMO announced yesterday that Magat Dam would release water today in preparation for Tisoy.

Residents of low-lying areas were advised to evacuate to avoid flashfloods.

The National Irrigation Administration said the water level in Magat Dam is at 190.6 meters as of 3 p.m. yesterday. The dam’s spilling level is 193 meters.
