Motorcycle rider dies in 8-vehicle smashup
MANILA, Philippines — A motorcycle rider died after he was hit by a garbage truck, which plowed through seven other vehicles along West Service Road in Pasay City yesterday morning.
Joaquin Bolaños, 58, died at the scene as he was pinned under the truck.
Aside from the motorcycle, traffic investigators said the wayward truck crashed into two private cars, three jeepneys and a taxi cab.
Personnel of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, who responded to the scene, said several others were injured in the collision.
Wilmar Dalugdog, 25, driver of the garbage truck registered with Leonel Waste Management in Parañaque City, said he was traversing West Service Road in Barangay 201 when he lost control of the brakes at around 7:15 a.m.
Dalugdog told authorities that the truck malfunctioned, causing him to lose control of the steering wheel.
Closed-circuit television footage showed Bolaños overtaking one of the jeepneys before he was struck by the truck.
Dalugdog is being held by police on charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property.
