Stolen phones? Visit Manila City Hall

Marc Jayson Cayabyab - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Manila Police District Special Mayor’s Reaction Team (SMART) is asking the public to go to its office at the city hall to check if they are the owners of the more than 300 stolen cell phones recovered in the city.

SMART chief Maj. Rosalino Ibay Jr. said seven persons have visited their office to recover their phones since they posted the recovery of the gadgets on Facebook.

He said the mobile phones were turned over to the police by the managements of Isetann Mall, Tutuban Mall and QQ Mall in compliance with the anti-fencing law, which prohibits the buying and selling of stolen items.

The owners may verify their phones by accessing using their password or checking the photos taken with the phone, Ibay said.

Mayor Isko Moreno has ordered the closure of Isetann Mall along Recto for non-payment of tax and for selling stolen and second-hand phones.

The management has since settled its tax deficiencies and committed to implement the anti-fencing law.
