MANILA,Philippines — At leat 450 firearms surrendered, recovered or seized during military operations were destroyed in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao over the weekend.

The destruction of the firearms was done during a ceremony marking the 32nd founding anniversary of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division (ID) at Camp Siongco in Barangay Awang.

Army chief Lt. Gen. Macairog Alberto keynoted the event and led the destruction of the firearms along with 6th ID head Maj. Gen. Diosdado Carreon.

The firearms were captured, confiscated, surrendered and recovered by the military in separate operations conducted from November 2018 to January this year.

The military operations were in compliance with an order of President Duterte  to get rid of loose firearms across the country, Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, spokesman for the Army, said.

Of the 458 firearms, 80 were recovered, two seized and the rest were surrendered by former communist rebels, lawless elements and barangay officials.

“Today, we have destroyed more than just the tools of war and death. We are also getting rid of the grim reminders of our conflict and division that slow down our march toward peace and progress,” Alberto said.

Carreon gave assurance that the 6th ID would continue to defend and protect the state and the people from all threats and disasters.

“It will remain as a reliable partner in the realization of the region’s hopes and dreams of a bright and prosperous future,” Carreon said.
