Magnitude 4.9 quake jolts Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake shook parts of Mindanao yesterday.

The tremor struck 16 kilometers southwest of Makilala, North Cotabato at around 9:55 a.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

It was felt at Intensity 4, which is classified as moderately strong, in Makilala as well as in Kidapawan City and Pikit in South Cotabato and Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

The quake was felt at Intensity 3 in Koronadal City, Davao City and President Roxas, Cotabato and Intensity 2 in Kalilangan, Kadingilan and Damulog in Bukidnon; General Santos City; Tupi, Polomolok and Tampakan in South Cotabato, and Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat.

Phivolcs said the quake had a depth of four kilometers and was tectonic in origin.

No damage was expected from the quake, but Phivolcs warned the public of possible aftershocks.
