1 dead, 1 hurt in eight-vehicle smashup

MANILA, Philippines — A woman riding a motorcycle was killed in a collision involving her vehicle and seven others along Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong City yesterday morning.

Grace Ann Pajemago, 25, died at the scene after she was crushed between a public utility jeepney (PUJ) behind her and a UV Express vehicle in front of her, police reported.

The PUJ’s brakes failed, causing it to rearend Pajemago’s motorcycle and collide with other vehicles.

The UV Express vehicle’s driver, Benjamin Celestra, was injured in the collision, which also involved a Subaru Hatchback, a Nissan Almera and a Mitsubishi Outlander, a Toyota Innova and another PUJ, police said.

The accident resulted in heavy traffic along Shaw Boulevard and EDSA’s northbound lane. 

Motorbike hits pedestrian

In Makati City, an Indonesian woman died when a motorcycle hit her on Friday night.

Su Sante, 39, was crossing Valero street when she was hit by the Yamaha Mio driven by Reniel Quitilen, 30, at around 10:55 p.m., police said.

Maj. Gideon Ines, city police chief investigator, alleged that Quitilen was speeding.

Sante died an hour later while being treated at the Makati Medical Center.

Quitilen, who was brought to the city police’s vehicular traffic investigation unit, is facing a charge of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide. ­
