BOC seizes P53-million smuggled produce
Port of Manila district collector Arsenia Ilagan said the containers were flagged on Aug. 14 for bearing misdeclared goods. They arrived at the port on Aug. 8.

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs (BOC) confiscated at least 16 shipping containers of smuggled agricultural products, with an estimated market value of P53 million, at the Port of Manila (POM) yesterday.

POM district collector Arsenia Ilagan said the containers were flagged on Aug. 14 for bearing misdeclared goods. They arrived at the port on Aug. 8.

Ilagan said they issued a warrant of seizure and detention order against the shipment on Sept. 4.

The shipment was consigned customs broker to Shinerise Trading Service and processed by Johnna Philipian Cristobal Aceveda.

Ilagan alleged that the consignee initially declared the shipment as fishballs with a total declared duties and taxes of P2,542,882.

Upon inspecting the containers, BOC examiners found they held carrots and onions, P20.08 million each; broccoli, P10.04 million, and potatoes, P2.510 million.

Ilagan said she has ordered the consignee’s accreditation cancelled and the customs broker investigated.
