Policewoman hit by truck dies; driver nabbed

MANILA, Philippines — A motorcycle-riding policewoman died when a hydraulic truck mixer sideswiped her in Pasig City on Thursday.

Cpl. Arvi Jenifer Dagus Leaño, 33, died at the scene from head and body injuries.

Responding traffic policemen arrested the truck driver, Guillermo Laurente, 50.

Brig. Gen. Nolasco Bathan, director of the Eastern Police District (EPD) said charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injuries would be filed against Laurente before the city prosecutor’s office.

Reports said that Leaño was on a Honda motorcycle on her way to the EPD District Mobile Force Battalion when she was struck by the hydraulic truck mixer (UQY- 410) along C-5 Service Road in Barangay Bagong Ilog at past 7 a.m.

Witnesses said Leaño was thrown off the motorcycle due to the impact.

Another motorcycle driven by August Yabut, 42, was hit by the truck.

Yabut and his wife Celeste, 43, suffered injuries.
