Philippines on alert vs swine flu
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine government tightened its security against African swine fever (ASF) yesterday amid an outbreak in Hong Kong.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol ordered quarantine officers of the Bureau of Animal Industry to implement stricter measures in monitoring the entry of meat products, especially pork from Hong Kong.
“Hong Kong is part of China so it was covered by the earlier ban that we issued on meat products. What we will do is institute stricter measures to ensure that shipments coming from Hong Kong are thoroughly checked,” Piñol said.
He said passengers bringing in meat and other agricultural products in the countrywithout the necessary permit, especially those coming from ASF-affected countries, maybe fined up to P200,000.
