MANILA, Philippines — Two phreatic or steam-driven explosions have been recorded at Mayon Volcano in Albay, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said yesterday.

Phivolcs said the phreatic eruption occurred at about 8:11 a.m. on Thursday and 6:27 a.m. yesterday, and  generated ash plumes as high as 500 meters before drifting southwest.

A moderate emission of white steam-laden plumes that drifted west-northwest, west-southwest was also observed.

Phivolcs recorded six volcanic quakes and two rockfalls.

Alert Level 2 remains in effect over Mayon. It means the volcano is experiencing a moderate level of unrest.

The agency reiterated its warning to the public that sudden explosions, lava collapses, pyroclastic density currents and ashfalls could still occur and threaten villages along the slopes of the volcano.

Phivolcs warned the public against entering the six kilometer-radius permanent danger zone and seven kilometer-radius extended danger zone in the south-southwest to east-northeast sectors from Barangay Anoling in Camalig to Sta. Misericordia, Sto. Domingo.
