Filipinos warned vs weapons in Hong Kong

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs yesterday advised Filipinos to refrain from bringing personal defense weapons to Hong Kong.

The agency issued the advisory after a Filipino student, who was bound for Canada, was arrested and detained by Hong Kong airport authorities on Jan. 8 for bringing extendable batons in his check-in luggage.

He was allowed to leave Hong Kong yesterday after legal representation and assistance from the Consulate General.

Personal defense weapons such as stun guns, pepper spray, tear gas, extendible batons, flick knives and knuckledusters are considered dangerous weapons in Hong Kong, Consul General Antonio Morales said.

“Unlicensed possession of these items is punishable by a fine of HK$100,000 and a maximum sentence of five years’ imprisonment upon conviction,” he said.
