Manila city jail inmate dies of flesh-eating bacteria
MANILA, Philippines — An inmate of the Manila city jail died of flesh-eating bacteria, which he acquired while in detention on Sunday night.
Gerry Baluran, of Arellano street in Singalong, died while being treated at the Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center.
Reports said Baluran was rushed to the city jail infirmary after he complained of shortness in breathing and heart pain.
His situation worsened, prompting the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology personnel to take him to the hospital at around 11:15 p.m.
Authorities said Baluran was suffering from necrotizing fasciitis, an infection that results in the deterioration of tissues and severe fever.
Baluran was held on drug charges.
