‘NPA rebel’ held for extort try on cop

MANILA, Philippines — A man posing as a member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was arrested for allegedly extorting money from a policeman in Marikina City on Friday.

Marikina police chief Senior Superintendent Roger Quesada said Lito Evangelista, 38, was caught in an entrapment operation in Barangay Sta. Elena at around 9:30 p.m.

In his report, Quesada said the suspect called Police Officer 2 Alan Ambona, 38, and demanded P3,000.

If the victim refused, Evangelista said he will either burn the policeman’s sport utility vehicle or kill him.

Ambona, who is assigned at a police community precinct in Marikina, informed his superior officers, who set an operation.

Policemen traced Evangelista’s whereabouts through the account number he gave, where Ambona would deposit the money.

The suspect was about to claim the money at a remittance center when Ambona and other policemen arrested him.

During interrogation, probers learned Evangelista is not a communist rebel but a worker at a public market.

The suspect is facing charges of extortion and grave threat.
