Immigration stops Chinese, Filipino for human trafficking
MANILA, Philippines — Bureau of Immigration (BI) personnel intercepted a Chinese man and his Filipina companion for suspected human trafficking at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 as they were about to leave for China last June 8.
The behavior of the two, who passed themselves off as a married couple, made immigration officers suspicious, said Julius Caesar Feria, who heads the BI’s Travel Control and Enforcement Unit.
The woman admitted that she worked as a household service worker for three months in Singapore. She initially claimed her Chinese companion is her husband and they met over the internet.
“They gave very inconsistent statements when asked about the details of their marriage,” Feria said.
The marriage certificate that the two presented showed they purportedly got married at a travel agency in Divisoria, Manila. They were turned over to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking for investigation.
