2 die of heat stroke in Manila

MANILA, Philippines — Two persons were found dead, apparently due to heat stroke, in Manila over the past two days, police said yesterday.

The decomposing body of supermarket employee Benjamin Gazzinga, 34, was found by his brother in his house on Bagac street in Tondo at around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said Gazzinga was last seen alive on Sunday and it was only the foul odor coming from his room that made his brother think something was amiss.

Meanwhile, 28-year-old Jonel Morta, a stay-in helper at Lan Zhou La Mien restaurant on San Fernando street, Binondo, was found dead in his room before dawn yesterday.

Morta complained about a nagging pain in his lower extremities when he finished his shift at around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to Police Officer 3 Ryan Jay Balagtas, homicide investigator.

Morta went to sleep in the room he shared with his cousin Crisanto, located on the fourth of the building housing the restaurant.

At around 3 a.m. yesterday, Crisanto tried to wake Morta but found he was already dead.

Pending autopsy results, police investigators said the two victims may have died of heat stroke.
