54 gun ban violators nabbed in Western Visayas
MANILA, Philippines — Fifty-four people have been arrested in Western Visayas for allegedly violating the gun ban for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls.
Superintendent Joem Malong, spokesperson for the Western Visayas police, said 38 firearms and 17 bladed weapons have been seized since April 14.
Of the figure, 15 firearms were seized in Negros Occidental on May 4 and 5, including six guns that were recovered from members of an armed group in Barangay Cambayobo, Calatrava.
On the same days, eight persons were arrested in separate operations in the towns of Binalbagan, Calatrava, La Castellana and Toboso as well as in the cities of Escalante and San Carlos, all in Negros Occidental, for violating the gun ban.
Malong said no poll-related violent incidents have been recorded since the campaign period started.
“Although the situation is generally peaceful and orderly, the regional police will still intensify security measures as the election day nears,” Malong said. – Cecille Suerte Felipe
